Cambodia
has a very rich culture and the people
are a warm and friendly lot too. Above
all, Cambodians are also very artistic
and talented. When visiting, do spend
some time to mingle with the locals;
visit some cultural centers and make
your visit a memorable one. |

KHMER
ART
Classical Khmer dramatic arts are
quite static in their contents. Audiences
seldom demand fresh stories but favored
well-loved familiar tales. Conservatism
and stylization are apparent in the
dance itself. Almost always played
to the accompaniment of an orchestra
or sometimes a chorus, Khmer dance
numbers rely on a vocabulary of studied
and carefully executed steps, postures
and hand gestures.
Khmers
are traditionally good artists and
fine craftsmen by culture. They produce
great paintings and many masterpieces
in textiles, silver, wood and stone.

RELIGIONS
AND BELIEF
Unlike
people from Western countries who
wear tattoos for decoration or ego
hikes, most Cambodians actually tattoo
themselves only for self-protection.
Khmers believe in Tantras and the
magical power they harbor. Few would
wear a tattoo just for show sake.
People in Cambodia have tattoos on
their body to ward off evil or harm
and it is widely believed that a certain
Yantra crafted by a monk or a holy
person on the chest of a believer,
will even bounce off a bullet or fragments
from a hand grenade.

MAJOR
OCCUPATION
Cambodia
sits in a middle of a rich-flat alluvial
plain, surrounded on three sides by
Vietnam to the east, Thailand to the
west, Laos to the north, and the Gulf
of Siam (Thailand) to the south. While
there are now many professionals and
a strong white-collar workforce, the
majority of the Khmer people are peasants
living out of the land. |

PEOPLE
Cambodians
are fast recovering from their past
nightmare and tragedies. Though it may
take some time for Cambodia to regain
a solid foothold in a civil society
once more, with a lot of perseverance,
hard work and luck, the nation is getting
there.
Khmer history is several thousands years
old. The Khmer people are a strong and
spirited people; they would not survive
this long without being a resilient
people. They are the descendants of
those who had built the splendor of
Angkor for the world to behold. The
Khmer people just don't quit so easily.
They are relentless in their pursuit
of peace and with it, perhaps a little
glory to ice the cake.
For every bad person out there in Cambodia,
there are ten of thousands of good,
clean, and decent people who are continuing
to work very hard to improve their neighborhood,
community, and society as a whole.
Do mingle with the people and enjoy
the warmth of genuine friendliness that
is rarely found elsewhere. You will
find that you will always be greeted
by a broad smile whenever a Khmer is
approached.
